Today, we celebrated Michelle's First Communion. May I say- I was pretty excited & happy. First of all, I got to serve, and the church was full of people who attended. There was more people that I thought there would be. Anyways check out the pictures that Faith took while at church. Also the pics that you would see if from our "feast".

Now this Sunday, not only do we celebrate the "Good Sheppard" Sunday but also this day is commonly known as "Vocations Day". The day that we Catholics & Christians pray for vocations to the priesthood & religious, consecrated lives.

"O Jesus, divine Shepherd of the spirit, you have called the Apostles in order to make them fishermen of men, you still attract to you burning spirits and generous young people, in order to render them your followers and ministers to us"

~ Pope Paul VI prior to the 1st World Day of Prayer for Vocations

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This has been a great day! Michelle received her First Communion, big feast, family time, and no homework to do. This truly has been a great day. What I am looking forward to this week is homework, First Friday/ Saturday @ Saint Sebastian in Ohio, Speeches in English, project presentations in World History, and counting down the days until summer vacation 2012! Did I mention that there are 16 more days left until summer vacation? Sophomore year is almost over! Wowww!

Have A Great Day!

Why It Matters: Education

MABUHAY!

It is Friday. Today I am going to start posting "Von's Thought of The Week". Something that is interesting and debatable. Note - that I am going to start every Friday's post with "Why It Matters". Today, the first day of this post, happens to be Education. Why it is important to have education.

The question is: Why Is It Important to Have Education?

My answer~input~explanation~opinion: Well the answer is really obvious, so that you could succeed in life. In my life, there is only one goal. To become successful, doing the things that I enjoy and helping people that I don't know. There are two answers to this. There is a this and a that. First of all I am going to start with a this.

We often heard in times that having a good education, specially when it is free is great! I agree, it really is great. It will help you become better people in life. I once asked Mrs. Hosier what the most important job in the world is, she replied " a teacher, without them you wouldn't succeed". I agree with her, without them we wouldn't succeed. But if you look at it closely, to be a successful teacher, you must have good education. You can't just drop out of school, get a GED and become a successful teacher. Okay- you might I guess, I just haven't met a teacher like that though. But the point is- having a good education would lead you to a better life. With great education comes great grades, with great grades comes great scholarships, with those great scholarships comes your future. We are all privileged to go to a public school and receive the education that we are receiving. In other countries, they struggle to set up a schooling system.

We should all be thankful for our teachers for teaching us to succeed in life. Without proper education, we tend to make stupid choices. Specially during this economic times that most of the graduates can't find a job. Also it is very important during this 2012 year, since it is the election year. Education is the root that could impact our decisions about who will run our government. I am not going into all that details.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Now- the other part that I disagree with is that having good education will not always please and satisfy you. You might think that after 12 years of your life going to school, you are almost done and wouldn't need to go to college. Some people do that- and some people just at a trade school, or where ever else they please in order to do something with their lives. Hey- if they are satisfied with it, then let them. It's their life not yours. There are a couple of careers out there that doesn't require a college degree type of education. As I mentioned some could go to like trade schools or vocational schools, get a degree within what- 18 months?, graduate and get a job. Again as I said- if it pleases them, then leave 'em.

Now- this might not be the best first post on this Friday. I promise that as time progresses and as weeks go, I will try to post stuff that really matters. It's just that Education came first since I was in school, listening to the news and just it was the first thing that came up, that's why. Things such as Abortion, Separation of State from Church, etc.

Trying Something "Extra" New . . . .

MABUHAY!

As I have mentioned a couple of weeks ago, I am going to try something new. It was- that I was going to post things that are completely random on my blog every Wednesday. Well thanks to a very special teacher, Miss Monticue, who gave me more suggestions on how I should make my blog more interesting and how to "spice" it up a bit. So I have decided to come up with this:

Every:

Wednesday- I will continue to post things here that are random and different. You know, besides to my daily life and things that goes on around me and my surroundings. I will also try to make it more interesting for my audience to read. I will also post maybe, just maybe, special recipes I have tried out, suggestions on how to deal with people, stress, you know things of that sort. You'll see what I mean next Wednesday!

Friday- I will start posting subjects that really matters. Topics such as abortion, homosexuality, the government, what I think about them, my opinions on them along with my comments.

Sunday- I will post the normal things. What I look forward to the coming week and a little reflection about what happened to me the past week.

The rest of the week, I will make special posts if it pertains to a certain Feast Day, Holiday, Event, or anything that is being celebrated either here, or in my home country or anywhere else.

You might now be wondering: What is the difference from Wednesday's post from Friday's post?

The answer is pretty much easy. Every Friday, either through your suggestion, comments or anything else that has to do with the week, or whatever the media puts, I will start putting my input on it. For example, the HHS Mandate, I will put on there why I do not support it, what I think of it, along with my opinions and comments about it. Hopefully, after reading Friday's posts, I have given you my inputs on it. Too clear it up and cause no confusion it will be somewhat political and religion news.

This is somewhat different from Wednesday's posts. That is because every Wednesday, it will come from like sites that I read, or things that I want to blog about. Random things such as cellphones, or computers, television shows or movies, as I have done in the past couple of weeks. Too clear it up, whatever I have posted previously will stay the same.

Sounds good??

Remember: I'm open to suggestions every Friday! Let me know what you think!

Have A Great Day!

My Perspective & Suggestion

MABUHAY!

It's Wednesday!- already! Which means, its blogging Wednesday. This week I admit I struggled to find a perfect topic that would go along with this week. However, last night I managed to find one. Now- I don't do this often, but I think I am going to start. Today I am going to blog about "The Lucky One" by Nicholas Sparks. As a guy reading this book I got all sorts of comments about this and that and about how I am reading a chick book. Well my answer to them is, it takes a real man to sit their, read and maybe weep a little. Too be flat out pancake honest, I don't read these books for the fun of it, okay well maybe I do sometimes when I am bored, but I read these books to get a better sense of understanding towards people. As I mature, I tend to hear things that I don't want to hear, see things that should be shown and talk about things that isn't worthy. Also as discerning to the priesthood it is very important to be exposed to things like this. It is one of your jobs to help the people.

The whole reason I read this book is that it ties with the Catholic Church.

The book "The Lucky One" of course is written by Nicholas Sparks. Now the movie that just came out recently is based of the book. I told myself I wasn't going to blog/ talk about it until I have seen the movie, (if I see it) so that I could give my perspective and opinion based on what I think after reading the book and watching the movie. But- I didn't, I broke a promise to myself- I had to write about it. Now what exactly is this book about.. well there is a U.S. Marine named Logan (Zack Efron). He finds a picture of a smiling woman (Taylor Shilling) that was half- buried in the dirt in Iraq where he was based. So what he does is he picks up the photos and leaves it in his pocket.

Now- you might ask, why is it called "The Lucky One". Well I think it is because Logan (Zack Efron) thinks that the picture holds the key to his future and destiny. When he gets back to America he sets out on a journey to find the woman in the picture. Along with his dog, they embark on a journey that would forever change his life. What happens next- I don't want to spill the beans even more. Go read the book and find out.

Here is a trailer of the Lucky One that I found on YouTube.

What exactly is the whole point of this?

As I discern to become a priest- I admit I would like to see this movie. Not for my sake, but probably for the inspiration during my future homilies (hopefully). See during these times, divorce & remarried rates have gone up. Along with civil weddings. In the eye of the church a wedding is a vocation. Just like the vocation to the priesthood or religious life, the Catholic Church recognizes weddings too as a vocation. Hopefully in the future when I become a priest, I could show this to young couples who are going through tough times and considering divorce. Hopefully by showing them this film they would better strengthen their relationships with each other.

The other point of this blog post is not to make you go out there and watch the movie- I'm not advertising anything. But one of the points is too give you my perspective on this book, and why I kinda want to see the movie. It's not bad for a priest to go watch these types of movies. I personally though, will not watch this movie. I am not a big movie type of person. I have seen a couple though and I thought they were okay.

But. . . . . . . . . . no- I don't want to watch this movie just for the fun of it. No I don't want to watch this movie just for the sake of it. Most of all NO I do not want, I said I would like too not want to, there is a huge difference there, to watch this movie- simply because I don't have time and I have way better things to do. If you have seen it, let me know what you think!

Have A Wonderful Day!

Gloomy Day

MABUHAY!

All I have to say is that this week has flown! Too be flat out pancake honest it went by quickly. We are now just down to 21 days left of school. After this coming week, most of us will probably start having a calendar with the days remaining. Now you might be wondering, well how come you get out early this year. The answer- no snow. It barely snowed this year which I was happy about because then Spring would be here and I didn't have to stand out in the cold shoveling ice off my driveway. However, this has been awful start to my Spring Season. My nose is stuffed up, people have been sick this and that- I just don't like that part of Spring. Other than that- Love Spring!

What else happened to me this week? Not a lot- Chemistry Test was swell. So yeah. This weekend I'm looking for a stress free one. I am going to probably garden out and wear my straw hat! (If it doesn't rain), clean the house, mow the yard, take a nap and work on the homework that I have. Of course- on Sunday, there is church- which always make me happy! On Sunday as according to the Good Book is Sabbath, which means I'm not going to do anything. Oh yeah not to mention I'm going to work on the Holy Trinity replica project, get it into church ASAP and have it evaluated by Father David, and who ever else wants to.

You might be wondering- eh his post is very boring today. I kinda agree with you. It's sorta boring because it's gloomy out and since the laptop is by the window, the sunshine normally gives me inspiration but since it looks like its about to rain- I don't know what to say. Also because I didn't do a lot this past week, just quizzes and tests. But don't worry- on Wednesday, I know exactly what to post, so I will give you what you want. I'll try to make it as funny and interesting and maybe even teach a lesson or at least examine your conscience a bit. It all happens here on Wednesday!

21- Days left til school is over, 21 days that will go by so slow, 21 days until Sophomore year is over,
"In the first month, from the fourteenth day of the month at evening, you shall eat unleavened bread until the twenty-first day of the month at evening." (Exodus 12:18)

Have A Good Day!

Appreciating Life!

MABUHAY!

It's Wednesday, which means that I will post something random on here today that either has to do with my opinion, my comments, my interests and all that sorts of things. Now. Today when I was in school, I thought about what to blog about today. I know that I said last week that i was going to blog about the Catholic Church, but I will do that some other time because I am still collecting, researching information about it. I know alot about the church already it's just that I want to be in depth. With that said back to what I was saying.

People have often times told us that life is important and that we only get to live it once so make it a good one. I know- you're probably thinking.. Oh please don't tell me he is going to talk about life because I am so sick of hearing it! Well too be honest, I'm not! I know how sick people get of hearing the same life lectures over and over and over again but--- this blog post is going to be particularly different from every life lectures out there. I'm going to expose to you the things that they don't often show in the media (CNN, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, etc.) Hopefully after reading this you will appreciate what you have. With that said, let me post!

First of all, we all know that life is amazing and it is one of the best gifts that we have gotten from God! People tell us to appreciate it and to appreciate all that is has to offer! However, let me ask you this- on your day to day basis, how many times have you actually stopped and thought about your actions and words and deeds? Ask yourself that question. Yes- in life their are so many things to do! Their are people to meet, places to see! However, have we really thought about what matters?

Remember it's the little things that matter not the big ones. With that said, let me start of with this:

The Sick & The Dying

People of the world! How many times have we stopped and thought about the people out their who are struggling? How many times have we visited the hospital for no reason to visit people who have no friends and family to visit them? How many times have we neglected to pray for those who are sick and dying? Most of all how many times have to stopped and thought about our own family (extended and immediate) being sick and dying? If you have said never or no to these, I think maybe it is that time that we should start.

The Poor & The Homeless

Let us all ask ourselves. How many times have we seen the poor and not have given them anything, not even a dollar? I mean come on people. The poor and the homeless are people like us too. They too have dreams that they want to accomplish in life. The only problem is that they may never do so. We are all so lucky to be able to have fresh, clean water, nice clothes to wear, nice cars to ride in. How many times have we seen someone out in the streets when driving through a neighborhood, and they happen to be sitting their with a sign on their hands saying "I Need Help". How many of us just past by and we have our conscience backfiring at us? How many of us actually took the time, turned the car around and gave that homeless/poor person a little change? I know that all of us are busy with this and that, and that we tend to neglect praying for them or helping them. But in the end people- God will reward you. It may not be on Earth, but I'm sure that it will be in heaven!

The Lonely & The Desolate

How many of us have seen or know someone that is lonely and desolate? Whether they are alone, in the nursing home, or just left their by their family members? How many of us actually took the time to visit these people maybe once or twice a week? How many of us took a free Friday evening, instead of watching the television or movie took the time to visit a local nursing home either to get to know them and their stories or help serve food to them? I know that no one in this world is perfect. I'm not perfect, the priests aren't perfect, neither is the Pope. No one is. However, how many of us have consciences? I know it's everyone. But the real question is- how many of us are actually willing to give up that 2 hour movie night on Friday evenings, and visit at a local nursing home and get to know the elderly their. If we can't visit them, how many of us are actually praying for them? Jesus did not pray just for himself, he prayed for everyone. Our jobs as Christians & Catholics are to pray for everyone just as Jesus did.

Hopefully after reading through this blog post, all of us may change our attitudes and open our hearts and appreciate life even more. It's not all about the money, it's not whether or not I get the best bargain at the mall. As a matter of fact in life our goals should not be to get into a good college, or get a good paying job, or raise a family- yes they are all good life-term goals but I have often times never heard people say that their goal was to get to Heaven. As Christians & Catholics, we must all forgive one another even to the point where you can't forgive anymore.

We must also never forget our dearly brethren who are sick, lonely, poor. Visit them. Care for them. Pray for them.

Have A Good Day!

My Passion ... & Interests ......

MABUHAY!

It's Wednesday, the second Wednesday of April to be exact since I didn't post anything last week due to Holy Week, I am now resuming that "tradition". Today, I am going to talk about my passion and interests. If all of you do not know me personally, I only have 4 things under the category of passion and interests.

My Passion & Interest ~ 1 The Catholic Church

For all of you who didn't know, I am planning on becoming a Catholic Priest after my High School years. There are things in the Catholic Church that is all "liberated" and "liturgically abused" so my goal in life is to help fix it, to help spread the Gospel/ word of the Lord to those people who have no access to them and to administer the Sacraments of Confession, Communion, Confirmation, Baptism, Holy Matrimony, Anointing of the Sick, and Holy Orders. For all of you who didn't know either that I have a Catholic priest that is stationed in Europe. Most of all, I am from the Philippines and the Philippines in 85% Catholic Country so being able to become a priest and serving my people would be a way for me to give back to my community.

The Catholic Church is one of my Passions & Interests. Without it, I would not have a life because if most of you didn't know that I based my life around the Church's teachings & beliefs. There are things that I based my life on that is not related to Catholicism necessarily but most of the time it's all based- regardless. I know say that Catholic Church is one of my Passion and Interests because during this time of hardship, economic struggle, and secularism- people ought to be told exactly what is going on and what the media is preventing us from knowing, I would be able to tell people to rely on and to trust him with all your problems and God certainly has a plan for each and everyone of you!

My Passion & Interest ~ 2 My Family

My second interest is my family. I say family because without them, I wouldn't be where I am today- in America, living a life that I would have never imagined. Going to a public school, having people I can call friends and most of all being with them is a blast. Without my family, there would not be a part of me that would always look back when I am about to make a decision that is unworthy of my conscience. There are things in life that I appreciate and not appreciate, but my family is certainly the type of people that I appreciate. Just because all of us from both sides don't get too all see each other altogether in one reunion, we still have this connection that is spread throughout our hearts so that we don't forget each one. Trust me- with both families put together from Dad and Mom's side of the family - there are lots of us!

I would have to say that even though my family is a bit annoying sometimes (specially my two sisters), there are things out there that we all enjoy doing like going to Mass on Holy Days and Special Feast Days and Sundays. We all enjoy traveling and seeing what the world has to offer! I admit- I enjoy spending time with my family, and with college a year or two away, it's going to be hard leaving them! But for now- let's not think about that!

My Passion & Interests ~ 3 My "Friends"

It's now the third Passion and Interest and this one is about friends. For all of you who knows me, knows that I don't have lots of friends. I have about 3 types of friends. Here is how I characterize them:
1) the type that would be there to help you succeed in life
2) the type that is like yeah were friends but not really
3) the type that says their your friend but really don't care or you don't ever hang out w/ them or talk to them

My first type of friends are the ones that would be there to help me succeed in life. In my life those people are my teachers, people such as Mrs. Miller, Mr. Tatman, Miss Monticue, Mrs. Walker, Mrs. Hosier, Mrs. Minch, etc. Even though they may not like me and are disappointed that they have to put up with me, I still consider them as my friends because without them (educators) we would not learn anything. Priests would not learn anything without going to school and you can't have a school without teachers so those are my 1st type of friends. There are most that adds on to that list but teachers are the one's that I had on the top of my head.

My second type of friends are they type that are like year were friends but they are really not. What I mean by that is like people who you talk to in school but outside of school you don't ever interact with them. In my case I don't interact (or hang) with them. In my friends category they are my acquaintances, people such as Chris Inniger, Zach LeFever, Cady Farlow, to name a couple. (I named them because we are all in art). I talk to them in school, we all "socialize" in art and other classes but outside of school, they don't talk to me, I don't know to them that's the way life goes. Too be honest- I'm fine with it.

My third type of friends are the type that are your friend but really don't care or you don't ever hang out w/ them or talk to them. In other words, they are the people who who don't want anything to do with out, or anything that applies to you, etc. In my friends category I would say that number 3 would have to be thee biggest category just because it's true and also because that's the way it rolls. Too be honest- I'm fine with it also.

My Passion & Interest ~ 4 Traveling

The final thing to my passion and interest is traveling. I absolutely love traveling specially during the Summer. In my lifetime, I have traveled over 15 times roundtrip (back- and- forth). I absolutely enjoy it! Whether it is by boat, car, train or plane, I enjoy traveling with my family. I personally enjoy it because the picture that are in magazines are amazing when you see them in person! Plus it gives me the chance to explore the wonders and nature of the world. I also get to see what the world has to offer with my own two eyes!

These are my 4 Passion and Interests. Come back next week and I will expand on them starting with The Catholic Church. Trust me, I'll make it as interesting as possible!

Have A Good Day!

Christ, Our Savior, Is Risen! Alleluia! Alleluia!

MABUHAY!

Here is a little Easter Message to all of my readers that I wrote after the Easter Vigil Mass a little while ago.

May you and your family have a blessed Easter Season and may the Risen Christ be with you all the days of your lives. Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead. This is the day that the Lord has made let us rejoice and be glad! According to the Gospel of Saint John, Mary the Mother of James and Mary Magdalene visited the tomb to find that Jesus is not there. The angel appeared before them and told them that Jesus had risen from the dead. In this holy day, we reflect back on the reason why Jesus had died- he died for our sins. Now that he is resurrected from the dead, he has broken the chains of sin that are attached to us, so that we may be free.

The resurrection from the dead; and Mary and Mary Magdalene visiting the tomb represents that Jesus really is the son of the God, the Messiah. Since Jesus rose from the dead, Satan is defeated. All of our debts and sins have been paid for and we should take the time and thanking the Lord for his suffering and death. The resurrection should be a happy time for each and every one of us. Without Christ dying who would save us? The Resurrection is the most profound miracle that the Lord has given us. For through his resurrection we may be resurrected from the dead and judge on the last day. We should always have that space in our hearts and minds for Jesus- the resurrected savior for it is through him, that we go to heaven, through him we see the Father, through him we meet the Saints, and through him we are saved.
God has adopted us as his son or daughter.

Let us all Thank God for this most wonderful privilege. If you had met the risen Christ you would certainly know it. If you haven’t yet met the risen Christ, roll away the stone and meet Jesus. Since you have been brought back to true life with Christ, you must look for the things that are in heaven, where Christ is, sitting at God’s right hand. Let our thoughts be on heavenly things, not on things that are on the earth, because we have died and now the life we have is hidden with Christ in God.

So today, let the bells of the world ring, let the Gospel be proclaimed in every nation, let us all joyfully sing Alleluia! We are the Easter People and Alleluia is our song!

May You And Your Family Have A Blessed Easter Season!

Tenebrae

MABUHAY!

It is the 4th Day of Holy Week. Today I will not make a special Wednesday post.

The name"Tenebrae" has been given because this Office is celebrated in the hours of darkness, formerly in the evening or just after midnight, now the early morning hours. At Holy Trinity it was celebrated at 7pm, at sunset. There is an impressive ceremony, peculiar to this Office, which tends to perpetuate its name. There is placed in the sanctuary, in front of the altar, a large triangular candlestick holding seven candles. At the end of each psalm or canticle, one of these seven candles is extinguished, but the one which is placed at the top of the triangle is left lighted.

With the last candle left, the priest/deacon/cantor takes the last candle and normally goes behind the High Altar and drops either a box of candles, or something that would make a loud noise or boom which represents the earthquake that followed Christ's death at Calvary. Once it has been done, they priest/deacon/cantor brings the candle back to the candleabra places it back in the middle, blows it out and the service is over. The congregation is then to depart in silence.

Have A Good Day!

Don't Forget to make a good confession!

Palm Sunday 2012

MABUHAY!

Today the Universal Church, celebrates Palm Sunday which marks the first day of Holy Week.

Today's Gospel/ Passion Reading: ~~ Mark 14:1- 15:47

"The Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread
were to take place in two days' time.
So the chief priests and the scribes were seeking a way
to arrest him by treachery and put him to death.
They said, "Not during the festival,
for fear that there may be a riot among the people."

When he was in Bethany reclining at table
in the house of Simon the leper,
a woman came with an alabaster jar of perfumed oil,
costly genuine spikenard.
She broke the alabaster jar and poured it on his head.
There were some who were indignant.
"Why has there been this waste of perfumed oil?
It could have been sold for more than three hundred days' wages
and the money given to the poor."
They were infuriated with her.
Jesus said, "Let her alone.
Why do you make trouble for her?
She has done a good thing for me.
The poor you will always have with you,
and whenever you wish you can do good to them,
but you will not always have me.
She has done what she could.
She has anticipated anointing my body for burial.
Amen, I say to you,
wherever the gospel is proclaimed to the whole world,
what she has done will be told in memory of her."

Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve,
went off to the chief priests to hand him over to them.
When they heard him they were pleased and promised to pay him money.
Then he looked for an opportunity to hand him over.

On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread,
when they sacrificed the Passover lamb,
his disciples said to him,
"Where do you want us to go
and prepare for you to eat the Passover?"
He sent two of his disciples and said to them,
"Go into the city and a man will meet you,

carrying a jar of water.
Follow him.
Wherever he enters, say to the master of the house,
'The Teacher says, "Where is my guest room
where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?"'
Then he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready.
Make the preparations for us there."
The disciples then went off, entered the city,
and found it just as he had told them;
and they prepared the Passover.

When it was evening, he came with the Twelve.
And as they reclined at table and were eating, Jesus said,
"Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me,
one who is eating with me."
They began to be distressed and to say to him, one by one,
"Surely it is not I?"
He said to them,
"One of the Twelve, the one who dips with me into the dish.
For the Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him,
but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed.
It would be better for that man if he had never been born."

While they were eating,
he took bread, said the blessing,
broke it, and gave it to them, and said,
"Take it; this is my body."
Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them,
and they all drank from it.
He said to them,
"This is my blood of the covenant,
which will be shed for many.
Amen, I say to you,
I shall not drink again the fruit of the vine
until the day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God."
Then, after singing a hymn,
they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Then Jesus said to them,
"All of you will have your faith shaken, for it is written:
I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be dispersed.
But after I have been raised up,
I shall go before you to Galilee."
Peter said to him,
"Even though all should have their faith shaken,
mine will not be."
Then Jesus said to him,
"Amen, I say to you,
this very night before the cock crows twice
you will deny me three times."
But he vehemently replied,
"Even though I should have to die with you,
I will not deny you."
And they all spoke similarly.
Then they came to a place named Gethsemane,
and he said to his disciples,
"Sit here while I pray."
He took with him Peter, James, and John,
and began to be troubled and distressed.
Then he said to them, "My soul is sorrowful even to death.
Remain here and keep watch."
He advanced a little and fell to the ground and prayed
that if it were possible the hour might pass by him;
he said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible to you.
Take this cup away from me,
but not what I will but what you will."
When he returned he found them asleep.
He said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep?
Could you not keep watch for one hour?
Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test.
The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak."
Withdrawing again, he prayed, saying the same thing.
Then he returned once more and found them asleep,
for they could not keep their eyes open
and did not know what to answer him.
He returned a third time and said to them,
"Are you still sleeping and taking your rest?
It is enough. The hour has come.
Behold, the Son of Man is to be handed over to sinners.
Get up, let us go.
See, my betrayer is at hand."

Then, while he was still speaking,
Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived,
accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs
who had come from the chief priests,
the scribes, and the elders.
His betrayer had arranged a signal with them, saying,
"The man I shall kiss is the one;
arrest him and lead him away securely."
He came and immediately went over to him and said,
"Rabbi." And he kissed him.
At this they laid hands on him and arrested him.
One of the bystanders drew his sword,
struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his ear.
Jesus said to them in reply,
"Have you come out as against a robber,
with swords and clubs, to seize me?
Day after day I was with you teaching in the temple area,
yet you did not arrest me;
but that the Scriptures may be fulfilled."
And they all left him and fled.
Now a young man followed him
wearing nothing but a linen cloth about his body.
They seized him,
but he left the cloth behind and ran off naked.

They led Jesus away to the high priest,
and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together.
Peter followed him at a distance into the high priest's courtyard
and was seated with the guards, warming himself at the fire.
The chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin
kept trying to obtain testimony against Jesus
in order to put him to death, but they found none.
Many gave false witness against him,
but their testimony did not agree.
Some took the stand and testified falsely against him,
alleging, "We heard him say,
'I will destroy this temple made with hands
and within three days I will build another
not made with hands.'"
Even so their testimony did not agree.
The high priest rose before the assembly and questioned Jesus,
saying, "Have you no answer?
What are these men testifying against you?"
But he was silent and answered nothing.
Again the high priest asked him and said to him,
"Are you the Christ, the son of the Blessed One?"
Then Jesus answered, "I am;
and 'you will see the Son of Man
seated at the right hand of the Power
and coming with the clouds of heaven.'"
At that the high priest tore his garments and said,
"hat further need have we of witnesses?
You have heard the blasphemy.
What do you think?"
They all condemned him as deserving to die.
Some began to spit on him.
They blindfolded him and struck him and said to him, "Prophesy!"
And the guards greeted him with blows.

While Peter was below in the courtyard,
one of the high priest's maids came along.
Seeing Peter warming himself,
she looked intently at him and said,
"You too were with the Nazarene, Jesus."
But he denied it saying,
"I neither know nor understand what you are talking about."
So he went out into the outer court.
Then the cock crowed.
The maid saw him and began again to say to the bystanders,
"This man is one of them."
Once again he denied it.
A little later the bystanders said to Peter once more,
"Surely you are one of them; for you too are a Galilean."
He began to curse and to swear,
"I do not know this man about whom you are talking."
And immediately a cock crowed a second time.
Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had said to him,
"Before the cock crows twice you will deny me three times."
He broke down and wept.

As soon as morning came,
the chief priests with the elders and the scribes,
that is, the whole Sanhedrin held a council.
They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.
Pilate questioned him,
"Are you the king of the Jews?"
He said to him in reply, "You say so."
The chief priests accused him of many things.
Again Pilate questioned him,
"Have you no answer?
See how many things they accuse you of."
Jesus gave him no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.

Now on the occasion of the feast he used to release to them
one prisoner whom they requested.
A man called Barabbas was then in prison
along with the rebels who had committed murder in a rebellion.
The crowd came forward and began to ask him
to do for them as he was accustomed.
Pilate answered,
"Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?"
For he knew that it was out of envy
that the chief priests had handed him over.
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd
to have him release Barabbas for them instead.
Pilate again said to them in reply,
"Then what do you want me to do
with the man you call the king of the Jews?"
They shouted again, "Crucify him."
Pilate said to them, "Why? What evil has he done?"
They only shouted the louder, "Crucify him."
So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd,
released Barabbas to them and, after he had Jesus scourged,
handed him over to be crucified.

The soldiers led him away inside the palace,
that is, the praetorium, and assembled the whole cohort.
They clothed him in purple and,
weaving a crown of thorns, placed it on him.
They began to salute him with, AHail, King of the Jews!"
and kept striking his head with a reed and spitting upon him.
They knelt before him in homage.
And when they had mocked him,
they stripped him of the purple cloak,
dressed him in his own clothes,
and led him out to crucify him.

They pressed into service a passer-by, Simon,
a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country,
the father of Alexander and Rufus,
to carry his cross.

They brought him to the place of Golgotha
— which is translated Place of the Skull —
They gave him wine drugged with myrrh,
but he did not take it.
Then they crucified him and divided his garments
by casting lots for them to see what each should take.
It was nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified him.
The inscription of the charge against him read,
"The King of the Jews."
With him they crucified two revolutionaries,
one on his right and one on his left.
Those passing by reviled him,
shaking their heads and saying,
"Aha! You who would destroy the temple
and rebuild it in three days,
save yourself by coming down from the cross."
Likewise the chief priests, with the scribes,
mocked him among themselves and said,
"He saved others; he cannot save himself.
Let the Christ, the King of Israel,
come down now from the cross
that we may see and believe."
Those who were crucified with him also kept abusing him.

At noon darkness came over the whole land
until three in the afternoon.
And at three o'clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice,
"Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?"
which is translated,
"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
Some of the bystanders who heard it said,
"Look, he is calling Elijah."
One of them ran, soaked a sponge with wine, put it on a reed
and gave it to him to drink saying,
"Wait, let us see if Elijah comes to take him down."
Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.

Here all kneel and pause for a short time.

The veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom.
When the centurion who stood facing him
saw how he breathed his last he said,
"Truly this man was the Son of God!"
There were also women looking on from a distance.
Among them were Mary Magdalene,
Mary the mother of the younger James and of Joses, and Salome.
These women had followed him when he was in Galilee
and ministered to him.
There were also many other women
who had come up with him to Jerusalem.

When it was already evening,
since it was the day of preparation,
the day before the sabbath, Joseph of Arimathea,
a distinguished member of the council,
who was himself awaiting the kingdom of God,
came and courageously went to Pilate
and asked for the body of Jesus.
Pilate was amazed that he was already dead.
He summoned the centurion
and asked him if Jesus had already died.
And when he learned of it from the centurion,
he gave the body to Joseph.
Having bought a linen cloth, he took him down,
wrapped him in the linen cloth,
and laid him in a tomb that had been hewn out of the rock.
Then he rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb.
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses
watched where he was laid."
